Sandpoint is located on the magnificent 43-mile long lake Pend Oreille, surrounded by the Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains, and Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort just minutes away.  This small town of 7,647 has a thriving arts community, a busy events schedule, a plethora of excellent restaurants, and wonderful boutiques and shopping keynoted by the national retailer, Coldwater Creek.

Schweitzer is famous for its massive bowls and breathtaking views. Schweitzer sits on 7,000 acres, 2,400 feet of vertical, 82 named runs, and 7 chairlifts with 2900 acres of skiable terrain, the largest in Idaho and Washington.  There is a slo 30K of cross country trails, beautiful snowshoe trails, brand-new tubing center, shopping, snowmobile and backcountry ski tours, and dog sledding tours.  The resort has numerous summer activities including mountain biking, hiking, chairlift rides, horseback riding, disc golf, climbing wall, bungee jump trampoline, picnicking and huckleberry picking, plus frequent music events and festivals.

The closest is Round Lake State Park 10 miles south of Sandpoint with a scenic interpretive trail and great fishing.
Farragut State Park is located 30 minutes south of Sandpoint and has 4,000 scenic acres along side Lake Pend Oreille.  Mountain biking and an 18-hole disc golf course are available.

bulletTrains ~ Sandpoint is located at the convergence of the former Great Northern and Northern Pacific mainlines from northern and central Montana, which merged into the Burlington Northern system in 1970.  "The Funnel" is a very active rail crossroads.  On average, 50 trains pass through per day.  One can see all the principle modes of locomotives as they pass through the area.  The transfer yard in Ponderay, 2 miles north of Sandpoint, is a great spot to take photos and see the trains switching tracks.
bulletHiking ~ there are more than 100 maintained trails within a couple hours drive of Sandpoint ranging from easy strolls to waterfalls and panoramas.

bulletKootenai National Wildlife Refuge ~ 30 miles north of Sandpoint near Bonners Ferry.  Hiking and cross-country ski trails and blinds where waterfowl can be viewed.  In the autumn, the refuge plays host to literally tens of thousands of ducks, geese, and swans migrating down the Pacific Flyway.  Summer residents include bald eagles, rough-legged hawks, herons, geese, and ducks.  With luck you may spot elk, deer, moose or bear.  Auto tours are open daily except for hunting season in October-November.

Day Trips
bulletBayview ~ located at the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille in a very scenic bay.  It is a known haven for sail boaters and offers a public boat launch as well as numerous marinas.  For dinner try the Buttonhook InnFarragut State Park is adjacent to the bay and has great picnic spots and hiking and mountain biking trails.
bulletPriest Lake ~ located northwest of Sandpoint.  The trail system provides outstanding mountain biking and hiking in the summer with some of the best snowmobiling and cross country skiing in the winter.  Marinas offer boat rentals and ramps for access to the lake.
bulletPriest River ~ a scenic 20 mile drive along the Pend Oreille River west of Sandpoint.  This historic town was in its heyday during the lumber and railroad boom.
bulletPend Oreille Scenic Byway to Hope ~ A great road trip that follows the shore of Lake Pend Oreille for the majority of its length, then continues along the Clark Fork River to the Montana State Line.  Consider stopping in Hope for lunch and some boating or swimming at Sam Owen State Park on the Hope Peninsula.  Restaurant suggestions in Hope include:  Hi Hopes Cafe, Ice House Pizzeria, Historic Hope Hotel, The Floating Restaurant, and The Dock on the Bay.  The 34 mile drive has several wayside interpretive exhibits found at the Pack River Wildlife Area, Pend Oreille Geologic Site, Hope Community Historical Site, Denton Slough Waterfowl Area, and Cabinet Gorge Interpretive Site.  You will learn about local wildlife, unbelievable glacial forces at work, cultural significance of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, and the history of the past 200 years while enjoying some magnificent scenery.
bulletInternational Selkirk Loop ~ Named The Northwest's Most Scenic Drive in Sunset Magazine in 2001, Sandpoint is a gateway community to the International Selkirk Loop.  The loop is a 280 mile scenic drive that wanders through Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada.  Visit www.selkirkloop.org for additional information on what to see and do along the loop.
